Module 3: Strategy

Led by Gorgi Krlev (ESCP Business School), Dominika Wruk (Mannheim University), Ghita Dragensdahl Lauritzen (Copenhagen University)

How can innovative solutions to address societal problems be realized? In this module we familiarize students with tools to develop (social) business models and concepts to create an impact-oriented strategy (e.g. intellectual property strategy, partnerships, new organizational forms).

Strategy

Contents

Social enterprises and other impact-oriented organizations develop innovative ideas to contribute to resolving societal problems such as inequality or climate change. To realize these ideas, they develop social business models that define benefits for their target groups (value proposition), characterize value chain activities, channels and partners which allow them to provide suitable offers to address their target groups’ needs (value creation) and describe an income model to finance these activities (value capture/income model).

In this module, we show how tools to develop successful business models can be applied by different types of impact-oriented organizations ranging from social enterprises to non-profit organizations, associations or informal civil society initiatives, to for-profit impact ventures. We discuss how appropriate intellectual property models can be developed that allow organizations to protect and share their ideas at the same time with the aim to grow their impact.

As social enterprises do not exist in a vacuum and typically rely on cooperation with other organizations or public authorities, we put a particular focus on how to select and interact with partners. We also cover the relationship between organizational governance and impact. As social enterprises are accountable for both, social and financial performance, we discuss whether and how new legal forms strengthening participative control and ownership can foster legitimacy, acceptance and support of social enterprises.
